CMS Proposes New Billing Codes for Complex MRIs

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is considering new billing codes for MRI scans that require extra care due to patient implants or other risks. These changes are outlined in the draft 2025 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule.

Currently, doctors performing MRIs on patients with implants or other complications aren't paid extra for the added work involved. This includes tasks like researching implant safety, assessing patient risks, and planning the MRI procedure accordingly.

The proposed billing codes would cover:

  • Researching and assessing implant safety: Determining if an implant is safe for an MRI and understanding any necessary precautions.
  • Doctor's review and safety plan: A doctor carefully evaluating the risks and benefits of an MRI for a patient with an implant and creating a safe scan plan.
  • MRI expert planning: A specialist customizing the MRI scan to safely accommodate the implant.
  • Pacemaker programming: Adjusting a pacemaker before and after the MRI to prevent issues.
  • Patient positioning and safety: Carefully placing the patient in the MRI machine to protect the implant.

If approved, these new codes would provide additional payment for the extra time and expertise needed for complex MRI scans.
